Gary Payton II father: Who is Gary Payton Sr.?
Surprisingly, the 29-year-old Seattle native’s father was a former professional basketball player. He was a member of the Seattle SuperSonics.
Gary Payton Sr. married Gary’s mother, Monique, many years ago. He has been solely responsible for Gary’s incredible career since he discovered his son’s talent at a young age and went on to train him personally in addition to the other coaches he hired to train his son.
He also played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, and Miami Heat. Payton and the Miami Heat won the NBA championship nearly two decades ago. Payton was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013 and was nicknamed the Glove for his defensive abilities.
Payton was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in October 2021, recognizing him as one of the league’s greatest players of all time. Gary’s father is usually seated in his games however, he tries as much as possible to stay away from the spotlight to avoid interviews.
Gary clearly inherited his father’s profession, as he has been playing professionally since his high school days at Spring Valley High School.
